The first of our chosen charities is the Cancer Society. The Cancer Society of New Zealand is the leading organisation dedicated to reducing the incidence of cancer and ensuring the best cancer care for everyone in New Zealand.
Some key facts include the following:
- Over 600 men die of prostate cancer every year in NZ - this is directly comparable to those figures for breast cancer.
- Approximately 3000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year.
- Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent forms of cancer for NZ men.
- There are 3 key issues that need to be addressed:
1) Nationwide rejection amongt the media and government bodies that this is a very real problem affecting very real communities
2) Widespread ignorance amongst New Zealanders
3) It continues to be treated as a taboo subject amongst New Zealand men
