On 19th April 2009 4 of us set out in a bid to become the
first 4 man crew to row the Indian Ocean. We are competing
in the inaugural Indian Ocean Rowing Race to raise some much
needed funds and awareness for man’s number one killer,
prostate cancer. All being well the race will take approx 60-70
days and will see us cover approx 3,568 miles (5,742 kms),
from Geraldton (Western Australia) to Mauritius...that's a long
way and a long time to be sat on our prostates!

KEY FACTS ABOUT THE CHALLENGE:
• It is estimated the race could take anything between 60-70 days to complete, all things being well.
• Each crew member is expected to lose anything up to 20-25kgs during the race.
• We have teamed up with both Prostate Cancer NZ and Prostate Cancer UK.
• We are likely to be rowing in 2 hour shifts with 2 crew on at any one given time.
• We will be competing with over 25 other teams from all over the globe, comprising of solo, ‘pairs’ ‘fours’ and ‘eights’ teams.
• This has already been dubbed, ‘The World’s Toughest Rowing Race’ by event organizer, Woodvale Events Ltd.
• We are currently the only New Zealand entry…so all being well will be the first ever New Zealand boat to row the Indian!
TRAINING
Aside from the physiacl demands of the challenge we are required to pass four mandatory qualifications before we are allowed to take our place at the start line. These include:
- RYA Shorebased Ocean Yachtmaster exam
- Marine short wave radio license
- Sea first aid
- Sea survival
We have enlisted the help of ocean guru Al Gwyer to help guide us through these murky waters and ensure we are up to speed on the technical and practical demands of the challenge.
THE ORGANISERS – Woodvale Events Ltd:
- Woodvale Events Ltd have supported more people safely across the oceans than anyone else.
- They have a highly experienced team consisting of technical advisors, race organizers and support crew who will monitor very step (or stroke) of the race from both on and off shore. This will include a number of support vessels that will provide cover in emergencies. A media will also form part of the safety vessel crew, trained to provide medical assistance either over VHF or onboard.
- It is the latest route to be opened by Woodvale Events Ltd, the organizers of the Atlantic and Scilly’s rowing series.
